28/Jul/2006: Slacking!!!

Yes I have been seriously slacking with my Blog and Web Space here at survivalistsite.com . Honestly I have been slacking in almost everything for the last few months due mainly to my back/neck surgery in April.

I have been unable to do much of anything, the Dr's orders, but sit around the house and stay bored silly. I go back to the Dr Monday for my 3 months followup, hopefully the fusions have healed enough so I get rid of that infernal cervical collar. Then it will be time to start Physical Theropy and start getting movement back in my neck and regain the strength in my arms. Suprising how much strength one looses when forced to sit around and do absolutely nothing for 3 months.

Yesterday I took out my Get Home Bag and started going thru the contents. I have been needing to do this for some time but something else always seemed to come up and I would totaly forget about it. With the condition of my back now days I am being forced to lighten the load in the pack, that way if I do need to abandon the vehicle and walk back I will have a more managable weight to carry.

Another item I am having to reconsider is the small waist pack that I use for my Every Day Carry (EDC) Kit. Basically this is a small 3 compartment waist pack that holds a few quick ready to use survival items, tools and a lightweight disposable poncho. Until recently this worked out very well for its intended purpose, but recently I started packing my CCW daily and find that the EDC does not carry well in combination of the belt carried CCW. Right now I am still at a loss when it comes to getting another carrier for the EDC contents.

Well, that about does it for this entry so till next time... BE PREPARED!

Yep, quiet a wile since I made a blog entry. Since my last blog entry the recovery went down hill for a couple weeks, but about a week ago things started going better and I am feeling much better. The pain was really driving me up the walls, not being able to sleep and just feeling like I had been ran over by a truck and tossed aside to suffer in misery. The pain meds helped, but sometimes pain meds make you feel worse than your already feel, but without the severe pain.

Since I was sitting around in a recliner, like almost all the time when I was not sleeping, I got to thinking about what would happen to me and my family if SHTF happened right then. I could not do anything for them other than telling them what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Basically I would have been useless for anything except as an advisor.

Then I was thinking, man what would happen if the medical facilities were just gone! No way to seek medical help if problems came up, no pharmacies to get medicines from. It would be a real nightmare for those with medical conditions. A very minor condition in normal times could turn into a deadly affair under SHTF condition. A week out of the hospital and everyone in the house came down with a tummy bug. Wanna talk about pain, try puking right after having cervical spine surgery! That was really painful and it was no fun.

Anyway, we did have meds for the upset stomach, plenty of fluids to keep everyone from dehydration and light foods to start back eating once we started feeling better. Under SHTF conditions something as common as a tummy bug could be devestating. Without proper meds to calm the tummy you would throw up everything that hit your stomach. With no AC to stay cool in dehydration could set in really fast.

Having sat around in my misery, thinking about all this, I started looking at all my Medical Kits and medicine cabinet. I have several home medical kits, one is a pretty extensive one that was purchased ready made and the other is a home built kit. They both include the basic "ouch items" but have a good assortment of over the counter medicines too. I have added a number of items to each kit over the last year or so, always making sure everything is within its shelf life and really useable.

My other medical kits are really First Aid Kits and Ouch Packs. One of each is carried in each vehicle and each BOB/GHB also has an Ouch Pack. These contain the basics but will have more items added real soon. One item thats going in every kit from now own will be something to help sooth upset stomach and the runs. Would really suck to be puking your guts out when water was hard to come by and physical activity was a must.

Well, guess I have ranted on long enought this evening. So till next time. Be prepared!

spent another boring day sitting around in the recliner, sleeping, watching a bit of tv and surfing the web when I felt like sitting up. Not a lot to write about but I did think about a few survival related issues today and wanted to post them here so I dont forget them later.

First will be my ability to enjoy shooting my firearms in the future. I hope this surgery has not ended my shooting days, man that would suck big time. I am sure I will get back to shooting my rimfires and perhaps my .32cal muzzleloader, but the centerfires is what concerns me the most. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait and see how things go over the next few months.

Second thing is with the vehicles. I really need to get some things done with my Jeep and truck as soon as I can. Nothing major, just some little things I need to address so they are 100% reliable in the event I ever need them for a bug out. That would be a really bad time to discover something needed fixing but was overlooked because everything else in life took a higher priority.

Well, thats it for today. Have fun and Be Prepared.

Surgery was done onThursday the 27th of April and from what my wife said it took them 3 hrs in the OR and 1 hr in recovery. They released me the next afternoon and since then I have been sitting at home taking the pain meds, sleeping, watching tv and dealing with the pain that the meds dont get rid of. Swallowing anything has been a real task since I had surgery, they went in from the front of my throat to remove the disc and install the bone/steel palte and screws, so my neck has been swolen and sore making swallowing difficult.

I cant sit at the PC for more than a few minuites are a time, so my bro-in-law loaned me one of his laptops and I use it in my recliner. If it were not for the laptop my blog would be really out dated by the time I can get back on the regular PC. Laptop keyboards really suck, takes me twice as long to type anything due having to go back and make corrections.

As far as survival preps go everything is on hold till I can recover enough to do something other than sit in a recliner all day long.

Well, thats it for today.

25/Apr/2006: My Community Page

Well, finally got a few things up on my Community Page this evening. Its pretty basic in layout, no graphics but will eventually have pics of gear, gadgets and guns, possibly a few other things to but right now its just getting started.

Needing something to start my articles off with I decided to use my Oregon Scientific WR102 Weather Alert radio for the first article. Its pretty basic, has one pic of the radio and my likes/dislikes about this particular model.

Spent a few hours surfing around some of my favorite shooting and survival forums today, and man do I miss being able to hit the range and shoot my guns. Will probably be 4-6 months before I can shoot any of my centerfires, but as soon as I recover enough from the surgery I will be hitting the range with my rimfires. One positive note about my down time and my firearms, they are ALL clean and ready to go.

That just about covers my day. So till next time Be Prepared

24/Apr/2006: Blog Day two....

Well, spent most of the afternoon taking care of medical appoints for my upcoming neck surgery. This entailed several hours of pre registration paperwork, ekg test, lung capacity test and blood work. Had to get a couple vials of blood for routine testing then a stinking blood gas check, that one hurts because they have to take it from a main artery in the arm instead of the regular vein.

Anyway, spent a few hours last night working on some content for my Community Page (CP). Have the basic layout complete, main page and the About Me page. Still have lots to do before Thrusday because after surgery I may be off line for a week or more depending on how well things heal.

Some of the field idea's I have for my CP will obivously have to be put on hold for a few months, recovery time ya know. Cant very well hit the woods with the gear and camera right after surgery, but hey it would be great except for that infernal cervical collar I have to wear for the next 3 months.

I started digging up a lot of my Preparedness links too, should have a good resource library for the links page once I get things put togather and laoded to the server.

A few days ago I was on a smaller Preparedness forum and the discussion of water purification was brought up. One of the big topics was the use of household bleach for purifying drinking water. Well, to make a long story short you can use household, non detergent, not phosfate, non fragrant bleach but its more for disinfecting rather than purification. I will address this on my CP page in a really detailed article.

Ok, I am off to get some things done with the CP page and perhaps a few odds and ends around the house. So till next time BE PREPARED!

23/Apr/2006: First Blog entry!!!

Welcome to rimfirehunter's blog!

Would like to thank Canuck In Denver for providing the space on his server for my blog spot and Community Page. Now that Canuck did his job its time for me to do mine and get to blogging and writting my Community Page.

About rimfirehunter

I am 40 years old, live in South Carolina USA, married to a wonderful woman and between us we have 6 children, three grown and three still growing. My intrest and hobbies are small game hunting, shooting, woods walking, camping, fishing, survival, preparedness and surfing the internet forums related to any of the above. I use the nickname rimfirehunter because I am an avide small game hunter using rimfire rifles and pistols.

Back in March I was working on my push mower and had some serious shoulder pains that would not go away. Thinking I may have pulled a muscle or two, I went to the family doctor, after 2 days of sucking it up, who treated me with anti-inflamatory meds for two weeks. After two weeks with no change, and no pain relief, he sent me to an Orthopedic who put me on steroids for a week and two weeks of Physical Theropy. Again, no change, so the Orthopedic Dr ordered an MRI of my neck, BAM! Problem found. Have two herniated disk pressing into my spinal cord, really bad, and one bulging disk constricting the nerve root and cord. So... the Orthopedic Dr recommended surgery as the only means at correcting the problem and sent me to a Neurosurgeon for a consultation and second opinion. Well... now I gotta have surgery to remove the bad disk and fuse the vertabre in order to remove the pressure off my spinal cord and relieve the pain, tingling and numbness in my shoulders and arms.

Since I am gonna be on the injured reserve list for about 4 months after surgery, I decided to make use of the time by blogging and getting something of a home page going. Cant shoot, cant fish, cant go camping so might as well do something constructive on the PC. Hey, blogging is constructive and so in putting togather a home page!

Well, that about covers everything I want to cover in my first blog post. Now its time to work on the Community Page stuff and see what I can come up with.
